Semax is a synthetic peptide analogue of the hormone ACTH. Although it is only a fragment of ACTH with no hormonal activity, ACTH and its analogues also have non-hormonal effects – among others, they increase the ability to learn and remember, and are responsible for maintaining muscle tone. The mechanism of action of this compound is not completely known, probably due to an effect on melanocortin receptors located in the nervous system. The most important function of semax is the stimulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BNDF) synthesis. It is a peptide produced by neurons, necessary for the function of the retina ( therefore the effect of greater contrast and sharper vision after nootropic substances), cholinergic and dopaminergic neurons. The presence of this factor stimulates the development of new neural connections and prolongs the life of existing cells. It has an important role in the formation of long-term memory and in all brain activity related to the formation of new neurons – including learning new movements or improving strength.
